Over the weekend we committed a crime at Ikea – we bought on impulse. We bought something neither of us really thought we needed and had no measurements or anything to help us gauge whether our new purchase would fit in our living room. Essentially this piece was destined to be a failure.
Behold, the offending purchase:
It’s not bad. We actually really like it on it’s own (despite a few design flaws) and the colors go well with the room. Unfortunately it was too tall to replace our bar table and too deep.
The problem with impulse buying is that it usually doesn’t stop at just one item. I was perusing Craigslist when I can upon a really nice 6 month old CB2 lamp that until recently was selling for $200 (not including tax and shipping). Someone was moving and willing to part with it for $125. I talked the lamp down to $100 and it was ours.
Lucky for us the lamp was a little more successful.
Once we got the lamp in place, we decided that we actually didn’t like the chair where it was. It was really close to the kitchen garbage can and the foot rest was a bit cumbersome where it was. Great, more moving around. We moved the long bar table out of the way, put the chair in the corner and added the side table from the craftroom just to see what it looked like. The side table did not work.
Eventually we moved the new lamp to the corner, added the side table from the living room and came up with this look:
It’s not quite right but it’s better. Maybe a better side table? Maybe painting a design on the bottom of the wine racks, maybe just a few accessories on the side table – I’m not sure what it needs.
Of course moving the bar out of the corner meant we needed a new bar. We spent hours coming up with different configurations until finally we decided they were going to go where the cookbooks currently were. Micah needed a pie break after 2 hours of arranging and re-arranging. The bar is in the far corner.
The bar is also a work in progress. It needs a bit of styling but otherwise should be fine. Right, now where do the cookbooks go? For now they are in the kitchen. Again, a little thinking is required on this. Cookbooks are currently covering an outlet and light switch.
We finally called it a night after 4 hours of rearranging things and the living still looked like this:
It was a mess. In the end, the little bar cart that instigated all this change is going back to Ikea. We are now on the hunt for at least one new side table, one new chair and maybe a table lamp. Looks like more Craigslist/Garage sale/thrift store hunting is in our future.
What was the last thing you bought on an impulse?
